Families that eat together ...

Eating regularly at the dinner table as a family ...

The family dinner table provides an ideal time and place for gathering all members of a family together in one place at one time without distractions. That means no tv, or cell phones, or ipods, or ipads, etc.  Most people enjoy food, and although if this is new to your family you may encounter resistance at first, the time spent at the table may be the longest stretch you get to communicate with your family.  Use the dinner table regularly. Use your time at the dinner table productively. Set aside all the frustartions of the day and focus on communicating - think of positive thoughts to share with your children and spouse. Find out what happened in everyone's day and how they felt about it. Allow everyone to have a turn sharing without the fear of being cut off and lectured. It's just a time to be able to communicate and learn to be respectful of each other's time and feelings. If kids don't want to talk let them know you will still be interested whenever they are ready to share their thoughts with you.

What does this have to do with health? Healthy relationships are our most valued possession on earth, and families are often fragmented because they didn't learn how important it is. Families can be the greatest source of strength and comfort, but often aren't. People with good relationships to come home to are happier and healthier than those whose relationships at home are stressed. Stress is related to many health issues.

We have the opportunity to create a place of peace and safety in our home. A place our children can learn to develop healthy lifestyle habits that they will carry on to their future relationships. What is your choice?
